مسئله شر از پرسشهای دیرینۀ بشر است. چرا خداوند، یا وجودی که خالق گیتی است، برای زدودن رنجهای بشر کاری انجام نمیدهد؟ در ادیان غیر توحیدی مسئله شر به دلیل ماهیت ویژه و غالباً شرورانه ایزدان چندان مطرح نمیشود. اما با رشد اندیشۀ بشری این موضوع به صورت ملموستری برای انسان مطرح شد. یکی از جالبترین پاسخها در این باره در دین زردشتی دیده میشود. به روایت شِکَند گُمانیگ وِزار، همۀ رنجهای آدمی از جانب اهریمن است و اورمزد فقط آفرینندۀ نیکیهاست و انسان را آفریده تا در نبردی مشترک با اهریمن، او را نابود و جهان را دگر بار پاک سازند و به رنجهای بشر پایان دهند. در این دین اهریمن خاستگاه مستقلی دارد و هیچ یک از آلام انسان را نمیتوان به اورمزد نسبت داد، که البته او نیز به سبب نیاز به آفریدههایش و برخی ویژگیهای دیگر قادر مطلق به شمار نمیرود.
